Box, Storage
Oval carrier made by Elder Daniel Crosman for Sister Olive Libbey
1867
Description
Oval box and lid with birch veneer bands, a white pine bottom header, and a basswood lid header. Swallow tails (two on box, one on lid) secured with round-head copper tacks. Headers held in place by slightly larger round-head copper tacks. A steam-bent hickory handle is fastened to the sides of the box by copper trunk rivets and copper burrs. No evidence of a surface finish but the exterior has a rich brown patina.
Notes
On September 24, 1867, a Mount Lebanon Church Family journal notes, “A company of visitors came here from Canterbury, vis. Sullivan Wright, Joseph Hersey, Sarah Woods, Olive Libbee (sic), Nancy Danforth, & Lucy Willard. They have been to Groveland, & Watervliet, N.Y.” Perhaps Elder Daniel made boxes for all of the party.
