Oval box painted yellow, inscribed by several Shaker sisters, Canterbury, NH
Description
Steam-bent maple oval box (a) and lid rims (b). Five swallow-tails on the box and one on the lid, secured with copper tacks. White pine headers held in place with copper points. Washed yellow on the sides and top exterior, and varnished over.
Notes
The box was made at Mount Lebanon and, as the inscriptions would indicate, given by Eldress Betsy Bates of the Central Ministry to Eldress Lucy A. Shepard at Canterbury in 1869. It was probably also made about that time. The unusual size of this box suggests that it was made for a particular use or purpose, but if so, it is not known.
