Description

(a) Section of rail with three pegs (threaded tenons). Rail is white pine with beaded edges and a cross-section of 11/16" x 2 13/16". Two original pegs are of maple; one apparently broke at tenon; remains of threaded tenon cut smooth and left in mortise; peg tenon cut about 3/16" from base and glued into mortise. Glue joint has failed so peg (b) is loose. Rail beads are painted bright yellow, center flat of rail washed gold yellow, and two original pegs painted or washed with red. Large pegs were for tack.
