Pine box, front and back butted to sides and nailed. Pine bottom nailed on. Lid hinged with small iron butt hinges to a hinge rail across top of back of chest and nailed or pegged to top of chest. Lid has/had pine cleats screwed across grain to keep lid flat. Outside of bottom originally paper covered but much of the paper has been lost. Joint between two bottom boards inside covered by strips of paper cut from music manuscripts.
