Pen wiper doll, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:
1950.3641.1
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Ivory-colored doll with a painted porcelain face and yellow painted hair and porcelain body. Arms are made of a dissimilar, lightweight material and affixed to the doll's torso with small silver springs. Folded pieces of felt in alternating colors of pink and beige create the doll's skirt. The doll has a peach ribbon belt that ties in back and a lace cape that covers its arms and torso.

Notes

These dolls were sold in the Shaker store. The skirt, which was made of scraps left over from cloaks made by the Mount Lebanon sisters, was used to wipe excess ink from pens.
