Box, Storage
Oval box, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Steam-bent maple box (a) and lid (b) bands with swallowtails (three on box, one on lid) secured by copper tacks. White pine headers. Printed paper label on the top. Box exterior originally washed or painted salmon and varnished over.
Notes
This box was used in the Medicine Department; there is a printed label on the lid for sal ammoniac, which has been used in the treatment of colds and as a cough expectorant (it also has numerous non-medical uses). Long storage of that salt compound has caused damage to the box.
