Oval box painted pumpkin orange, Sabbathday Lake, ME
Description
Steam-bent maple oval box (a) and lid (b) rims. Three swallow-tails on the box, and one on the lid, all pointing left and secured by copper tacks. White pine top and bottom headers held by cut iron nails. The tacking pattern is unique in that each swallow-tail has two tacks, vertically oriented, between a single tack at top, and the vertical row of tacks near the center line. there is a vertical row of tacks on the lid rather than the usual two. Exterior painted pumpkin orange and varnished. Penciled inscriptions on the box sides noted on the accession card are no longer visible. The inside of the lid top is randomly stamped with "1/8" and "3/16" number stamps, along with a faint "M" and a series of cuts or chisel marks at 1/8" intervals, as would be made on rulers.
