Table used for cutting bread, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Bread-cutting table (lacking knife) of birch. Four splayed legs with turned tapered cylinder beginning about 1 1/4" below level of apron bottoms. Heavy aprons mortised and tenoned to leg pommels which are pinned. The top (cutting surface) consists of a 1 3/4" thick slab of birch which has sideboards nailed to the back and both sides. The sides are joined to the back by dovetails. The cutting surface overhangs the undercarriage on all sides. A 1" or so hole is drilled through the top a bit off center, providing a pivot for the cutting knife. The table is painted red, except for the cutting surface.
