Peg turning gauge, Hancock, MA

Object ID:
1960.11527.1
Community:
Massachusetts, Hancock
Description

Gauge for laying out lengths of peg rail pegs when turning. The gauge is of white pine sawn and whittled to shape and an iron pin (nail?) driven into gauge at appropriate spot and filed to a knife edge so as to scribe desired length of peg. Near the center of the gauge there are two nicks in the pine that are pencil blackened. Thus, it appears that some other layout lines could be gauged as well as length.
