Object ID:

Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Auger bit handle consisting of a turned maple half-handle with a threaded tenon, a steel sleeve with square holes, one smaller than the other, through the walls at the center, and another turned maple half-handle mortised and tapped to accept threaded tenon. The tenon also has a tapered square hole through it that is positioned such that an auger bit with a square, tapered tang would slide through the larger sleeve hole and the hole in the maple tenon and terminate in or above the smaller sleeve hole. The tenon is relieved along one side to accept a wedge that would lock the auger bit tang in place. The sleeve end into which the handle half with the tapped mortise is lined with a brass bushing.
