Description

Circular wooden rim with rawhide sieve. Overlap clinch nailed and reinforced by a sheet iron strap clinch nailed over the end of the overlap on the outside. A further plate of sheet iron is clinch-tacked to the outside of the rim.

Notes

Used to sift mattress stuffing (corn husks), a task performed annually. In an April 30, 1883 journal entry from Mount Lebanon's North Family, it is recorded, "The rest of us were... helping the Sisters about riddling beds & cleaning house...." (Acc. no. 10349).
