Awl, Leather
Leather awl, Canterbury, NH
Description
Leather awl with a metal blade, circular in cross-section. The blade tapers, and is flattened on two side of the point. The blade has a wider diameter set into a wooden handle, reinforced by a brass ferrule. The ferrule has a small hole on its side. Beyond the ferrule the handle increases in size, has an incised scribe line, continues increasing in size for 1/8" and curves in a concave line, creating the handle neck, before increasing in size again to form a bulbous base with two more incised scribe lines. There is an imperfection on the bulbous portion of the handle causing the scribe lines to be incomplete.
