Oval box painted red-brown, attributed to Enfield, NH
Description
Steam-bent birch oval box (a) and lid rims (b). Three swallow-tails on the box, and one on the lid, secured by copper tacks. Butternut top and bottom headers held by copper points. Stained reddish brown or washed red and coated, perhaps with orange shellac.
Notes
The box was purchased for the museum in Portland, ME, and attributed to the Alfred, ME Shakers, but has subsequently been attributed to the Enfield, NH Shaker community.
