Description
Pre-production armed rocking chair; maple posts, slats, stretchers, rocker blades, and arms. Hickory splint seat, original. Arms are scrolled, transitional pommels. Original finish, dark stain has largely bleached to natural maple color.
Notes
According to the vendors, this chair descended in the family of Caroline Benton Tilden Whittlesey (1848-1916), who lived in New Lebanon, NY, and purportedly acquired many Shaker objects from Sister Sarah Collins. The vendors also note that, "Judging [by] its slender, vertical proportions, this elegant example was made for a Shaker sister."
