Plane
Topping plane, Sabbathday Lake, ME
Description
A shop-built plane of unusual design. The body of the plane is of ash with one side straight (inside) and the other sawn to an arc with the escapement open only to the outer side. The wedge is also of ash and the iron, made from a file, is ground with a lipped bevel. The sole of the plane is rabbeted to the inside and out leaving the working sole about 1/2" below the rabbeted surfaces and the outside edge of the working sole is arcuate. An ash beam (3/4" x 1 5/8") is through mortised through the plane body and wedged in place forming an acute angle with the inside of the body (acute to the rear). The end of this beam (the last 6 1/4" of length) is stepped up to 1 1/4" thickness such that the lower surface of the beam is in the same plane as the rabbeted surfaces of the sole of the plane. An 11/16" diameter hole has been drilled through the beam about 15/16" from end. Two 1/8" diameter holes are present on the plane body side of this 11/16" hole and a faint shadow indicates that some other component was mounted there. A further hole (3/8" diameter at top and 1/4" at bottom) exists about 1 11/16" back from step in thickness.
