Two-handled square basket, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Square base to oval rim. Severely discolored black ash splint. Uprights 3/8" - 1 1/8"; weavers 3/8" x 1/2". One weaver, directly below rim, has been slipped under weavers in the shape of a rotated "L." Double grip "ear" handles (5/8" wide x 1/8" thick), double notched, that comes down on the outside. Split rim with double lashing. base: uprights continue downwards to form base, in between these uprights, splints have been inserted to create design. Exterior base has four cleats (14" x 1 1/4"), 3" apart, attached with six metal nails a piece.
