Description

Pine cupboard consisting of four compartments, each with its own door. Two end doors are four panel, two center doors are six panel. Entire cupboard is constructed of white pine; carcass is rabbeted and nailed; interior is divided by shelves and vertical dividers to create compartments for herbs. Doors are through mortised and tenoned with joints double pinned and wedged (outside frame only), are hinged with iron butts. Third door from left has surface-mounted iron lock inside and brass escutcheon outside. First door on left has a ceramic knob (Bennington Pottery?), other three have spindle-turned, ebonized maple knobs with threaded tenon. All four doors originally had spring-loaded brass catches but two right doors have lost the catches and are know equipped with barrel catches. Door panels are fielded but fields and edges are flat. Compartments were labeled; many labels remain either intact or in fragments.
