Description

Lithograph showing the Church Family, Sabbathday Lake, seen from the cemetery at the northwest. There are cutaways from the upper corners for the addition of decorative border elements. At top center is a smaller inset image, of the Novitiate Order, Poland Hill. The view was based upon a drawing made by artist Phares F. Goist, and it was published in History of Cumberland County, Maine: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of its Prominent Men and Pioneers, 1880. This was one of a series of gazetteers made of populous Maine counties; each volume featured drawings of every town and village in each counties, including the Shaker villages.

Notes

The Church Family journal of Sabbathday Lake noted on December 17, 1879 that, "Elder Otis has arrived late in the evening with an Artist who has come to take a view of our village to insert in the forth coming History of Cumberland County." On the following day the journal stated, "Phares Fulton Goist, the artist, drew a picture of the Church and the Village on Poland Hill." Finally, the entry for December 19 stated, "Elder Otis returned to Alfred by noon train. The Artist completed drawing the picture of our lovely Villages and returned to Biddeford by evening train. It was a splendid picture." Six weeks later, Goist made a drawing of the Alfred community with which the Shakers were also well pleased.
