The Picturesque Shakers
June 25, 1896
Description
Vol. LXXXII No. 2128 issue of Leslie's Weekly, published June 25, 1896. The cover illustration is a photograph of a statue titled, "Our Gallery of Statues. William McKinley: A Man Wanted and Found." On page 435 is a brief essay, "The Picturesque Shakers," by Bert Phillips. It is illustrated with four photographs: at upper left, a brother wielding a scythe, captioned "At Work in the Field;" at center, a sister carrying a gathering basket through woods, captioned "Sweet-Faced Meditation;" at lower right, a sister stands against a tree, facing left, captioned "A Type of Shaker Simplicity;" and at lower left, a sister seated outside peeling potatoes, captioned "Beauty Dignifies a Homely Service." The text indicates that the author visited the Canaan Family; as the Lower Canaan Family closed in 1884, he visited the Upper Canaan Family.
