Description

August 1892 issue of The Ladies Home Journal. Cover features a poem, "In August," by May Lennox, illustrated with an engraving. Pages 7-8 feature a fictional work, "A Child of Earth," by Belle C. Greene, with two illustrations by Wilson De Meza. On page 7 at upper left is a portrait of a young woman in Shaker dress, captioned "What should a little Shaker maiden know of love?" at lower right is an illustration showing the young woman and a man in worldly suit and bowler hat, standing in a cemetery; it is captioned, "You forget how we are taught to look upon marriage here." In the story, a sixteen-year-old sister named Janet is courted by a man named Robert Kilton, and is given permission to leave the community to marry him.
