The Shaker Settlement, at Canterbury
Description
This copy of "The Shaker Settlement, at Canterbury," was published in The New Pictorial Family Magazine Established for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge: Containing a Description of Each State in the Union edited by Robert Sears. It appear on page 279 in volume 4 (1847) of that publication making it the first known printing of the illustration. A copy of the complete volume of this publication can be found at: babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433084764319&view=1up&seq=12. The illustration is accompanied by an article describing the history, beliefs, and practices of the Shaker Society at Canterbury, New Hampshire. The illustration is Sears' artist rendition of the scene at Canterbury that first appeared in The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge (November, 1835) (See: 2020.16.12). The illustration accompanies a description of the history, beliefs, and practices of the Shaker Society at Canterbury, New Hampshire, also generally copied from The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge. While it appears that the original artwork for the illustration was done as a wood engraving, the fact that all of the publications containing the illustration appear to have been printed from the same setting of type, it is likely that the pages set for this publication were used to create a stereotype plate that was subsequently used for all of the other publications containing the illustration.
