Description

Amerikanischer Stadt und Land Kalendar auf das 1831ste Jahr Christi is an almanac published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Conrad Zentler in 1830. This German-language almanac contains 36 pages including the covers. On page [3] is an illustration titled "Gottesdienst der Tanzenden Quaker" by George Gilbert of Philadelphia. The illustration was printed from a wood engraving, measures 5 1/4" by 7 1/2", and depicts Shaker brothers and sisters laboring in the square manner -- four ranks of brothers facing three ranks of sisters. A woman, apparently from the outside world is seated on a bench watching the service. A man's hat and cane suggest that a man is also in attendance. From the curve in ceiling of the room it is clear that the scene is set in the Mount Lebanon, New York, Shakers' Meetinghouse completed in 1824. The illustration is signed in the wood engraving "G. Gilbert." Rather than creating this illustration from direct observation, Gilbert took as his source a lithograph created by Anthony Imbert [see: 2019.7.1] sometime in the year before Gilbert's copy was published. On pages 5 and 7 is an article titled, Americanischer Stadt und Land Kalender, that apparently explains the Shaker scene. The article has not been translated.
