Sandstone cylinder, probably a millstone, att. to Enfield, CT

Object ID:
1976.18705.1
Community:
Connecticut, Enfield
Description

Brown sandstone component of some sort of mill, presumably. Cut to a 36" diameter cylinder, with the cylinder walls surfaced in a "diaper" pattern. In the center of the top, there is a 3/4" x 5 1/4" x 6 1/4" recess with a 3" diameter hole in its center. Below the hole, the cavity widens and extends downward (about 4 1/2" diameter, depth unknown). Accession information indicates that there are marks on the underside. At the edge of the top, there is a portion of a 1/2" deep x 6" diameter recess with a portion of a 2" diameter hole, about 3 3/4" deep, suggesting that the object may have been cut from an even larger object.
