Cushion

Object ID:
1966.15818.1
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Two pieces of cotton cut to a trapezoidal shape. Three sides would be coated with hide glue, rolled around the chair seat rails, and before the fourth edges were sealed, the cushion was filled with fine palm leaf strips, probably remnants from making fans or bonnets.

Notes

Inner cushions provided padding between the two layers of woven chair tape forming the seats of Shaker production chairs.
