Description

(a) White clay pipe, either Shaker-made in commercial mold or commercially made. Narrow rim around bowl, larger rim around stem end. Unused. (b) Pipe stem of basswood (Tilia americana). One end tapered to fit clay pipe.

Notes

According to Brother Ricardo Belden of the Hancock, MA Shakers, the Shakers stopped using tobacco in the 1860s, they still kept clay pipes for use in treating certain throat ailments.
