Iron gear casting pattern, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:

Community:

Description

An iron gear made thicker by adding a 1/2" thick piece of white pine to the flat side of the gear.

Notes

Used to make an impression in a cope and drag filled with casting sand. By filling the impression with molten iron, an almost exact replica of the pattern resulted. However, since upon cooling the molten iron shrinks, the replica would be somewhat smaller than the pattern.
