Description

This photograph captures the Shaker Village of Mount Lebanon from an elevated position south of the South Family on the old main road that runs through the village. The photograph was probably made very near where the NY-MA boundary line crosses the road. The first grouping of buildings is the South Family. This view includes a good image of the Family's Horse Barn with its original flat roof and cupola (or more properly belvedere) and slightly to its right the family's Cow Barn (no longer standing). Up and to the left of the South Family Cow Barn are the buildings of the Second Family. The Stone Sisters Workshop that burned in 1923 is visible in its original form as well as a glimpse of the Second Family Dwelling that was torn down in the early 1940s. To the right of these buildings the Dairy Barn of the Center Family appears with a smaller barn belonging to the Second Family obscuring its east end. To its right the box-like four-story Center Family Dwelling can be seen. The Church Family buildings are obscured nearly completely by trees but just beyond the Center Family Dwelling the North Family's Great Stone Barn and the family Dwelling House can be seen.
