Description

Individual tools mounted on board to be held in vise: 1) upright vise; 2) shave or splitter, 4" horizontal blade, fixed at one end; in front of blade a thin metal piece to hold object being split against the blade; 3) behind blade, on metal plate to which blade is attached, stamped gauge notched at 6 per inch and numbered from 3 to 0, 1 to 0; 4) metal thickness gauge mounted against the edge of the block with 14 progressively larger "gates" from approx. 1/8" to 1/4"; 5) on side of block in front of shaving or splitting blade is small wooden shelf with slot which might have held another tool not now present.

Notes

It is not clear what this collection of tools was used for. The blade could have been used for skiving leather. The upright shave is used in basket-making. Whip-makers used both leather-working tools and basket-maker's tools when whip stocks are made of cane strips.
