Laborers' Huts, Trolley Line, Lebanon Mountain
Description
The photograph shows three log and sod huts built on the side of Lebanon Mountain that once housed laborers working of clearing and leveling land that was planned to be used for an electric trolley line between Pittsfield, MA, and New Lebanon, NY. In 1911 the North Family Shakers were engaged in discussions about allowing a right of way for a company to build a trolley line across their land as it descenced Lebanon Mountain and into New Lebanon. While some remnant of the proposed road bed is still visible, the line was never completed. An inscription on the back of the cardboard mount for the photograph reads: "Laborer's Hut. Lebanon Mt. Trolley Road. Above Res[ervoir]." A later comment was added by New Lebanon resident Sharon Moon that reads: "'Little Italy' brick yard Road - on some maps," suggesting that the laborers were Italian.
