Gumwood sewing carrier lined with magenta satin and outfitted with strawberry emery, pincushion and wax. Swivel handle with peg acting as a gap to leave room for a lid (not present). Notes
In "From Shaker Lands and Shaker Hands," M. Stephen Miller notes that a very few Barlow/Perkins sewing carriers were marked with a gold label, "Genuine Mt. Lebanon N.Y. Shaker Work". He does not mention white paper labels as appears on this piece. However, the use of gumwood and the construction technique of gluing rather than nailing the follower into the base are all characteristics of Barlow/Perkins-made bentwood containers.
