Bit, Expansion
Extension bit, Canterbury, NH
Description
Consists of an odd steel bit with a machine taper at upper end that is set into a socket at the end of a wrought iron tapered shaft machined to final size after forging. This shaft terminates at its upper end in another machine taper. The steel bit has two cutting edges and knickers as does twist augers and a double thread lead, but rather than having some sort of twisted fluting for chip clearance above. This bit has a 1 3/8" diameter cylinder above that is slotted (3/4" x 7 5/16"). Above this is the machine taper socketed in the iron extension. Originally the bit was held in the shaft socket by a set screw but this screw is no longer extant. There is no provision for chip clearance.
