Postal stamp for Mount Lebanon, NY
ca. 1873
Description
A brass and copper postal stamp. Letters forming "Mount Lebanon N.Y." encircle a center section with changeable dates. The stamp is fitted with a turned boxwood (Buxus spp.) handle. A brass turn screw releases or locks the center, changeable type, which is set with "1873/22".
Notes
In 1861 the Mount Lebanon Shakers began to operate their own post office, and the community became known as Mount Lebanon, NY (instead of New Lebanon, NY, the town in which it is located). The post office was located at the North Family until 1898, when it moved to the Church Family. It closed in 1930.
