Press, Straw
Straw-rolling device used for the production of hats, Sabbathday Lake, ME
Description
Wooden straw press. The press has a rectangular platform with two arms, dovetail-jointed near one end, that sit at an angle over the platform. Each arm is one piece of wood but split over half its height. The arms have a crossbar at approximately half-way. On the sides of the arms, above the crossbar, are two through-holes. The opposite through-holes on each side have a hand crank. These cranks turn the two wooden rollers set between the arms. At the top of the arms are two threaded thumb screws, which secure the two ends of the arms.
