Description

Flax wheel with cherry turnings, oak beam and wheel rim, ring-porous hardwood tread (possibly ash) on treadle, iron or steel axles and rawhide tie. Natural finish. Distaff not original but turned to match other Canterbury-made distaffs.

Notes

F.W. stands for Trustee Francis Winkley of the Church Family at Canterbury, NH Shaker Village. He was Trustee from 1807-1845 and, as such, all wooden ware produced by the Church Family during his tenure was stamped FW.
