Plumb board, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:

Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

A plumb board of white pine and sheet metal. Curiously, the board is tapered in width so when a bob is centered, the structure would slope away from vertical with height. A V-notch is cut in the top for the bob string and a cross-piece is nailed on over the end grain and notch. A 1 1/8" diameter hole is drilled through about 4 1/2" from the notch, centered on center line. Near the bottom, a rectangular is cut through, again centered on center. A plumb-bob sheath is formed by bending sheet metal and nailing it over the hole. Another piece of sheet metal covers the other side of the plumb bob hole. A pine crosspiece which rotates about a wood screw centered in the back of the board is also incorporated.
