Vise
Broom vise bench, West Family, Watervliet, NY
Description
Vise/bench consists of a maple beam supported by four legs which appear to be recent replacements made of commercial 1 1/4" diameter Sitka spruce dowels. The vise has a fixed jaw through-mortised and wedged in the bench beam and a movable jaw, both of maple, which pivots on an oak pin. The vise handle of maple pivots on a steel pin through a red oak post secured to the fixed vise jaw by two maple blocks. Iron fittings pull the movable vise jaw closed when the handle is depressed. The jaws are filled with cast iron fittings shaped to grasp the whisk broom securely. A leather broom needle holder is tacked onto the side of the fixed jaw.
