Gauge, Cutting
Cutting gauge, Canterbury, NH
Description
A heavy duty cutting gauge of maple, iron, and probably steel. The stem of the gauge (1 1/2" square) has been cut to form an integral handle at the cutter end. The fence is a block of maple cut to accept the stem and then capped over the stem opening with a 1/4" iron plate bolted or riveted to the wood portion of the fence. This plate has a tapped hole in its center for an iron or steel thumbscrew which, when tightened, bears down on an inset strip of iron in the top of the stem, thereby locking the fence. A supplementary fence block is screwed to the original fence. The steel cutter is held by a wedge.
