Wheel, Spinning

ca. 1797

Birch table and head support; legs are chestnut; head post is birch with a bone ferrule. The head is birch, iron, and leather; wheel has an oak rim, chestnut spokes, and birch hub.
Notes
The initials "BB" are believed to stand for Barnabas Briggs, a trustee at Sabbathday Lake from 1794 to 1801. However, spinning wheel scholar Michael Taylor speculated that the initials refer to Benjamin Bailey, who was a trustee and wheel-maker at Alfred.
