Oval carrier with lid, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Steam-bent maple box and lid bands held in elliptical shape by copper tacks through five swallow-tails on box and one on lid. White pine top and bottom headers; the bottom held in place by copper tacks and wire nails; the top by copper shoe-pegs. Steam-bent and carved hickory handle, secured to outside of box with copper trunk rivets and burrs, brass wood screws and copper tacks or escutcheon pins. Painted yellow on exterior.
Notes
This carrier was originally an oval box. At some point, a carved and steam-bent hickory handle was affixed to the outside of the box. Given that the top trunk rivets and burrs were installed above the level to which the lid band covered the box band, the lid no longer seats on the box. When acquired, the carrier had a tag attached indicating that it had been owned by Sister Emma J. Neale and given to her by "Amelia" (possibly Sister Amelia Calver).
