Spout, Sap
Description
One of a group of 21 sap spouts for collecting maple sap, made of sumac (Rhus spp., probably R. typhina). Sumac branches were cut and de-barked, then, beginning at about 4" from an end, the branch segments were cut with a draw knife such that about 1/2 of the pith streak was exposed. The pith was scraped out of the exposed portion and burned out of the enclosed portion with a hot iron rod.
