Pitcher
Porcelain pitcher with blue transfer printed foliage design, Hancock, MA
1872-1951
Description
Porcelain pitcher with transfer-printed cobalt designs. The body portrays a bamboo-like plant with leaves and flowers on one side; criss-crossing bamboo-like branches, tied with a ribbon and covered with large flowers on the opposite side; two overlapping screens/posters with floral scenes in frame, on top of a bamboo-like branch, underneath the spout; and four Japanese characters which connect the three main decorations to each other. The interior and exterior lip has a lace design. This design is replicated down the spine of the handle. The pitcher has a standard bulbous well which tapers to the neck and widens at the mouth. The spout is slightly shorter than the handle height. The handle has an auricular shape, with a protruding exterior thumb rest.
