Mitten form dated 1837, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
ca. 1837
Description
1950.122.1 is a single piece of wood with straight sides which begin to round off about two-thirds of the way and meet at the tip. This makes up the body of the mitten form. The opposite end is square with a large through-hole 7/8" in diameter. There is also an integral handle attached to the end with a carved neck, giving the handle an hourglass-like shape, and a curved end. The handle has a through-hole, 3/8" in diameter, which has a string looped through it. 1950.122.2 is a piece of wood carved into the form of a thumb. Where the thumb meets the body is carved concavely so that it meets flush with the body. The two pieces are attached by a piece of string looped through the large through-hole on the body and a small through-hole on the thumb piece, 3/16" in diameter.
