Postcard, Picture
Infirmary and Office, Mt. Lebanon, N. Y.
1907-1920
Description
This photograph of the Church Family Infirmary with the Office to its left was probably taken in the mid-1870 judging from the size of the trees planted along the road, but the card itself was published after March of 1907 when the Postal Service allowed both message and address to share the back of a postcard. Two brothers and three sisters or young girls are standing in the walkway in front of the Infirmary and show a good example of what was meant when, around 1873, the Shakers only allowed people to have their pictures taken "in scenery" rather than having portraits made.
