Postcard, Picture
The Old Shaker Road, Near Lebanon N.Y.
1910-1918
Description
Compassed willow trees seen in the image were often planted on the banks of Shaker mill ponds. The intention seems to have been to use their roots to secure the banks of the pond. The were compassed -- that is cut about the height of a person above the ground to keep them from growing large branches that might break and fall into the pond. This postcard was mailed by "Sybil & Lew," dated July 22, 1918 (the postmark date is illegible) and mailed to Miss Ethel Clute in Middle Grove, New York. The message describes a 180 mile automobile trip that Sybil and Lew made along the Mohawk Trail and around Western Massachusetts.
