Object ID:

Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Ann Lee Cottage was the original dwelling house for the members of the Second Order of the Church Family (called the Center Family after 1896) at Mount Lebanon, NY. In 1904 the then abandoned dwelling was renovated to be a guest house for visitors. It was the hope that people connected with the Shakers close friend, Laura Langford, would come to experience the Shakers and some might join the community. The venture by 1906. The Meetinghouse had also been fixed up so the Shakers could hold meetings there for their guests. Because this postcard does not have its back side divided for message and address, by postal regulations it would have been printed prior to 1907 giving a narrow window of opportunity when the card was printed -- between when the dwelling was named Ann Lee Cottage (1904) and the advent of the divided back postcards (1907).
