Portrait of Sister Cecelia De Vere
1890-1912
Description
This image of Sister Cecelia DeVere (1836-1912) was created by James E. West in the early 1890s as part of his series "Views of the North Family Shakers at Mount Lebanon, New York." Apparently, Howard M. Gillet, a photographer in Lebanon Springs, New York, used West's image, with or without his permission to publish his own postcard with the image of Sister Cecelia De Vere. While the image was probably made between 1890 and 1905 when James E. West was photographing the Shakers at the North Family, but the postcard print done by Gillet likely dates from after 1907 when divided back postcards were allowed by the U.S. Postal Service.
