1916

Object ID:
1952.5108.1
Community:
Massachusetts, Harvard
Description

Six Sisters in Shaker dresses and bonnets walk on the path leading away from the Harvard, MA, Shaker meetinghouse. It is suggested in the title to earlier versions of this image that these are the last of the Harvard Shakers. The community was closed and sold to Fiske Warren in 1918. According to the second, annotated, edition of The Shaker Image (p.201) the Sisters pictured, left to right, are: Myra McClean (1842-1922); Annie Belle Tuttle (1868-1945); Eldress Josephine Jilson (1851-1925); Sadie Maynard (1879-1953); Lottie Tremper (1860-1929, left in 1919); and Laura Beal (1866-1846, left in 1923).
