Description

This photograph was made from an elevated position east of the Church Family -- possibly from the family's Machine Shop dam or the Machine Shop itself. The photograph was made after the completion of the new Church Family Dwelling and the new Ministry Shop in 1877. Other buildings included in the photograph on the west side of the road (left to right) are the Brick Shop (1827), the Cow and Ox Barns, probably a Garden Tool House just north of the barns, the Meetinghouse (1824) with its arched roof, the Tannery and just enough of the 1785 Meetinghouse to see that the roof had been converted from a flat roof to a gable roof. On the east side of the road (left to right) is an open building that likely held a saw for cutting fire wood to length. Next to it is a barn-like building that may have been a wood house. It stands to the south of the family Wash House. Directly west of the Wash House is the Infirmary and north of the Wash House is the Church Family Office. The back of the photograph mount is printed, "E. A. Simmons, No 1. Cottage Row, Pittsfield, Mass."
