Shakers Returning from Church.

1871-1875

Object ID:
1951.4395.1
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Makers
Irving, James (1818-1901)
Description

The vehicles are heading south -- probably to the Second, South or even one of the Canaan Families follow Sunday meeting at the Meetinghouse (1824). The Church Family buildings in the image, from left to right, are the Wood House/Sisters' Workshop (1841?), the Dwelling (1788) or Great House, so called, the Meetinghouse (1824), and the old or first Meetinghouse (1785) probably being used as a workshop at this time. The wire fence visible just under the heads of the lead team was erected in the summer of 1871 so provides an "earliest" date for the image.
