Description

The front of the postcard has a handwritten inscription in the upper left-hand corner that reads: "Shakers Albany" and above that it appears that the initials, "S. F." have been added in a lighter colored ink. "S. F." designates these Shakers as being photographed at the South Family at Watervliet, NY. See 1951.4424.1 for another copy of this postcard. The Western Reserve Historical Society holds a copy of this postcard [No. 218] with the names of the Shakers sitting for the photograph written on the back. They are identified as: "Upper row. George Duncan, Ozias Bogart, Anna Goepper, Freida Sipple, Florence Bourn, Mary Dahm, Grace Dahm. Middle row. Eld. Josiah Barker, Eld. Isaac Anstatt, Deborah Knight, Joanna Myers, Ella Myers, Margart [i.e., Margaret] Caldwell, Eldress Anna Case. Third row -- school girls."
